Dinner In A Movie

Digital photograph

Digitally manipulated photograph.

Inspired by the movie, The book of life (2014).

This photograph represents a love that has been stronger than life itself.  Love is a strong emotion that can be identified with a lot of items; thus, I decided on using a rose as a symbol of love.  This rose is a dying but not dead yet flower, representing the fought for love my photo is going for. There is a duality of the living and the death, and that connection with life. It also explores the betrayal of a friend, which is also a type of love.  For betrayal I used a big knife in the middle of that empty book.  The petals in the corner of the book represent the love that someone lost by doing wrong choices.  The candles is a representation of a romantical environment, something that people use to create a good scenario, but it's also meant to represent a spiritual connection.  The pair of rings represents the connection between two people, as well as the pair of spoons. The contrast of the spoons and knife is like a good versus evil vibe that I went for.  Finally, the empty page of the book is a message to the viewer.  You are the one that decides your future, death might not be the ending.  Write your own story.

 Memorial Presbyterian Church
1889

History:

  • The church was founded by Henry Flagler, a wealthy industrialist and railroad magnate, as a memorial to his daughter, who passed away at a young age.
  • The church features a blend of Spanish Renaissance and Venetian influences, with stunning details like a large, ornate dome and intricate stained glass windows.
  • The church's 208-foot tall bell tower, designed to resemble the tower of a Spanish mission.
  • The Memorial Presbyterian Church continues to serve as an active place of worship and a major historical landmark in St. Augustine, attracting visitors for its architectural beauty and historical significance

paragraph

I decided on using these two buildings together since they are both old buildings that I saw some potential on making it look more modern. I wanted to incorporate elements from both buildings but making it seem more modern. From the Castillo I wanted to use the old corners of the building but I wanted to make it modern, so I made spirals in the corners instead of the normal shape. From the presbyterian church I really liked the blue tiles from the building. I got inspired by that to use the blue color and pattern in this building. The color is my strongest element in this piece, and I think the spirals really makes it seem like an old building that was re-built into a more modern one.

The Governors House
1598

History

  • The site was originally used for government and military purposes when St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565, making it the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the continental U.S.
  • After the Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded Florida to Britain, and the building became the residence of the British colonial governors, continuing to serve as the seat of government.
  • In 1920 The building fell into disrepair, and its historic significance was recognized. In the 1930s, it was restored and turned into a museum.
  • The building serves as a cultural and historical landmark, offering exhibitions on the history of St. Augustine and the role of the Governor's House through the centuries.

Paragraph

I decided on using the Governors House because I really like the structure of the building. I really liked that pointy ceiling. Another thing that I really liked about this building is the pattern of the bricks on the side. That is something that I wanted to incorporate on these buildings. From the Villa I really liked the towers and again the simple shape of it. I also really liked the contrast of the colors but we were allowed to use only one color. I ended up using the shape of the governors house for the building and the tower shapes of the Villa, but in a modern way. I ended up using better the color in both pieces. I know that color is my best ally which is why I went more that way. I wish I did more than just a basic shape, I need to work more on my creative thinking for my future pieces.

Reflection Statement

The three sculptures visually communicate a depth and new use of these materials. Showing a hard worked process to create these sculptures with a new concept of a still movement. My goal with these pieces was to show movement with the required materials and a vibrant expression with color.

While exploring the materials for the sculptures, I wanted to focus on how to incorporate color to these pieces because color is one of my strongest ways of showing my artistic view. I decided to include different tones of colors to make it seem more in depth. I Felt the work was lacking on my blue piece, maybe the shape was not what I wanted so I decided on working more with the color and patterns than the shape of the piece.

To conclude I want to keep exploring using different shapes to create work. I would like to learn more about my own process of creation of a piece, I think I can work more on developing more creative ideas. This piece allowed me to try new things and think out of my comfort zone. The making of this exposed new ideas such as using wood and glue to create a unique shape and develop from there, without planning on how to start the piece, just working as I go.
